The Survey Questionnaire

The intent of the effort described here is to shed light on the student-parent-teacher relationship, and gain an understanding as to how spirituality helps that relationship grow.

These questions were asked to parents, teachers, and students.  They were asked in person, through telephone conversation, and through e-mail.  These were mainly families actively involved in the Armenian Church.  However, not all the families who attend the Armenian Church necessarily bring their youngsters to that Church’s Sunday School.  Some of the youngsters attend Armenian school, others public, and yet others private religious school.  The students are mainly in High School, grades 9 through 12.  Some of the parents are born in this country, while others have immigrated here.

Here are the questions asked to the students, parents, and teachers.  The questions were asked to an individual person or a group, and generally without the presence of members of the other group.

1.     What are the most important elements that a student needs to learn in school?

2.     What is the student’s responsibility towards his or her education?  In other words, can a student learn and excel in a non-supportive environment?  And inversely, can a student fail even when he or she has support from others and the necessary educational resources?

3.     What role do the parents play in their youngster’s education?  How important is their role, if any?

4.     What role does the teacher play in a student’s education?  How important is the teacher’s role, if any?

5.     Does Christian education, received at the Church or otherwise, help a student in school?  If so, how and why?

An attempt is made below to provide some of the typical responses and simultaneously comment with observations and possible insights.  However, few words of caution about the results.  First, these responses are not intended to represent all the views or even a cross-section of views within the Armenian Church.  These are the views of those who were interviewed.  No effort has been made to conduct a statistical analysis.  Secondly, you may interpret the obtained responses differently then the ‘Summary of Survey Findings’ provided earlier.  We hope that we will hear your views and response to that which is presented here.  An attempt has been made to change names and situations while maintaining the essence of a response.  Therefore, any similarity to a reader’s situation is purely coincidental.

We want to thank all the persons, families, and Parishes who were kind enough to make their time and resources available for our effort.  We hope and pray that this will help us all as we continue in the service of God!
