It is imperative that we share our career aspirations with another person. Without this sharing our career aspirations either remain as unrealistic dreams or lose their visionary inspirational power. It is no surprise that Christ said: “Where two or more are gathered in my name, I am there.” It is during such sharing that our dreams turn into plans and our vision crystallizes. So with whom should we share our career aspirations? In fact, there are a variety of persons with whom we need to share depending on the input we need. Each will be discussed differently. Here we will discuss the family aspect of career planning.
In the movie production of a famous work that relates to Napoleon’s invasion and eventual defeat in Russia, towards the end one of the heroes is with his wife at the conclusion of an accomplished day. They are jubilant with the results of the work they have accomplished. Still, at the end the wife reminds the hero that their children need their teeth worked on. It is a wonderful way of reminding us that at the end of the day, even with all our career aspirations and accomplishments, we are still human beings who need our family’s love and compassion, and we will appreciated by our family only to the extent that we care, love, show compassion, and give of our time to them. It is no surprise that when Christ was on the cross his mother was by his side. In turn, one of the last deeds he did while on the cross, Christ assured that his mother was cared for. Although various people may give us honors and recognition, yet that which is lasting is how we utilize our career to show an exemplary life that is loved, respected, and modeled. If we seek fulfillment from our career, it needs to be first and foremost, a reflection and expression of the goodness that we have within us. We discover this goodness only when we share our career with at least one other person.
For our career to become a reality, we need to share our aspirations and vision with others. Sharing with another person with whom we can speak of the family context of our career gives us an opportunity to look at how our career will express the God given goodness we have within us, and in turn allow for the love, respect, and appreciation of who we are!
