The Hopeful Career

#3 Our Career Fulfillment and Security
is from Within Us!

Often we hear: It is not what you know but whom you know! Although there is some truth to this statement, yet for genuine career fulfillment this is NOT true. True sense of fulfillment from our career comes from within us. Along with this fulfillment comes true job and career security. These cannot be given to us; we must earn them!

When we have an objective that we want to accomplish in our career, we can actually assess our progress. Our sense of fulfillment and job security come directly from our ability to monitor our progress, and from our ability to move towards our objective. If we sense progress then we sense fulfillment and career security, and we not only do we feel like going to work in the morning, but even seek the challenge of attaining even greater achievements. The catch is though having such an objective that we can consciously guide rather than being directed and forced upon us! So how can we develop an objective that we can guide and cannot be easily taken away from us? By remembering the words of Christ: Where your treasure is, there is your heart as well!

This saying of Christ is often interpreted as not placing a great deal of emphasis on worldly riches. This is true. But then what should we place our confidence on? We place it on the fact that God has instilled certain talents and capabilities in us, and that He has given us the rationality and the free will to use these capabilities in a supportive, life-building manner. This life building begins with our person, family, relationships, and of course career. Our job security does not come from our job title, not even from our diplomas or certificates. Instead, it comes from that eternal creativity within us, that image and likeness of God that always overcomes obstacles, makes the impossible possible, and creates that which is new and exciting.

Therefore, the richness that Christ wants us to build our life upon is that image and likeness of Eternity that is within us. It is this eternal richness that gives us the sense career fulfillment along with job security that is independent of the organization within which we function, and the economic conditions that we face. We have the opportunity and capability to guide our future by the grace of God, and the more intentionally, wisely, and actively we guide our career, the more hopeful, fulfilled, and secure we sense!
