A Prayer Directed through St. Mary
Soorp Krikor Narekatzi
Madian Voghperkootyan [The Book of Lamentations]
Lamentation Number 80
[A Selection, in Free Translation]
Support with your prayers of outstretched hands,
The confessed Mother of the living ones,
That when I leave the valley of this life,
Without torment I may go towards life,
Towards the prepared dwellings.
May judgment be lenient (upon me) at my passing,
though it is burdened by injustice;
May my day of crisis be turned into a day of rejoicing,
(you) the one who brought life to Eves tormentness.
Intercede, request, beg (for me),
since just as (I believe) in your ineffable purity,
(likewise) I believe in the acceptance and power of your inquiry.
For me as
the endangered one . . .
With your tears help me,
You who are blessed among women;
Kneel for my mediation,
You who are the Parent of God;
Take care of the wretched,
You who are the altar of God;
Give your hand to the one who reaches out to you,
You who are the heavenly temple of God;
Glorify your Son through you,
by (Him) giving me the miracle of expiation and mercy;
Daughter of God and Mother,
May your honor be elevated
through me;
And through yours,
salvation may come for me.
