Lent Observance and Expectation Poll
Respondents’ Ranges and Comments

Updated 3.14.03

Reasons for Observing Lent. Here are some of the reasons that respondents say they observe Lent. The latest are the beginning.

- It helps me to remember God, and say my prayers.

- A period of self-examination and control.

- I have a hard time keeping lent in this country. Everyone talks about “great Lent.” What’s great about it? No one helps you keep Lent. You are on your own.

- Because its there.

- To better understand the spirit in the Church services. But I go to Church on Sunday to gain some strength to keep me focused on the importance of keeping Lent, but I find the curtain closed and people depressed. Then I go to Church during the week for services, and people announce how delicious is the food that will be served after the services.

- To strengthen the "holy" personal relationship with God.

- Lent is an individual thing. You keep Lent, but hardly anyone around you. You want to talk about the importance of abstinence, but there is no one around to talk about it. I have not found anyone on the internet to talk about abstinence during Lent. I guess Lent exists and sounds good in the books and stories, but not in real community life.

- It is my first time. I was looking forward to staying away from food and entertainment during Lent, and I am still doing it. But I find the least support for it in the Church and community. I can see that during this time, aside from a couple of jamerkoutouns and small retreats, there is not much focus or support for Lent.

- To get closer to God and focus my attention on his word and the spiritual aspects of my life and my family's life.

- Because I am a member of God's Church, I accept the faith of God's Church.  Therefore, I also want to attempt to keep the fast of God's Church, the Great Fast.
